One of the most distinctive items of equipment worn by US Army soldiers during the Vietnam War was the M7 bandolier. It is a military bag with snap button closure and two pockets. One carried an M18A1 anti-personnel mine called a Claymore (like a great Scottish sword). The other housed the M57 ignitor and performance tester. After the detonation of each mine, the soldier was left with such a bag, which over time was simply called the “claymore bag”, and was used to transport equipment. It was re-manufactured and used after the end of service. The military shoulder bag was so popular that its civilian version was made commercially.
